3 Things That Cause a Windshield Chip or Crack to Grow
Windshield chips and cracks are not just unsightly, they can turn into a costly problem. Chips or small cracks in a car’s windshield are very common but they should not be left ignored. It is important to get them repaired quickly so that you avoid them growing which can lead to a total windshield replacement. Below are 3 things that cause windshield chips or cracks to grow.
1. Heat (or a significant change in temperature)
If you have cracks and chips and it gets hot outside, the glass will expand and that could cause the chips or cracks to also expand and grow. When chips and cracks grow they may become unrepairable and you may wind up needing a total windshield replacement. The cost to repair chips or cracks may be covered by your automobile insurance or will be so much smaller than the cost of having to replace your windshield that it is certainly an investment worth making. Tucson Local Media elaborates on what happens to your car’s windshield during the summer and why it causes cracks and chips to grow, “While the summer heat will not directly cause chips or cracks in your windshield, it can be very bad for an already damaged windshield. Heat causes chips and cracks to spread, so those 110-degree days can do a number on your windshield. ‘The summer is one of the worst times of the year to put off getting a windshield repair,’ said Gary Bons, operations manager for auto repair business for AAA Arizona. ‘Minor cracks and chips in your windshield will spread when exposed to intense heat and sunlight. Be proactive and get your auto glass repaired as soon as you see damage.’”
2. Movement/Jostling
If you drive on bumpy roads or slam your car doors it may actually cause your windshield crack to expand! Yes, those sudden slams or jerks may cause your windshield to move around enough that a crack or chip cannot withstand the movement and spreads. Be gentle and be careful when driving to avoid unnecessary jostling of your vehicle.
3. Rocks or Debris
If you drive around with a chip or crack you may encounter a rock or debris that has been kicked up on the road. If it hits your windshield that is already damaged, it could cause new damage or it may make the existing damage worsen.
