Repair the chip. Keep the windshield when you can.

Start with an assessment of the damage

Auto Glass Direct & Tint helps Phoenix and Tempe drivers find the right next step for windshield chips and cracks. When the damage is suitable, a professional resin repair treats the break while the existing windshield stays in place.

We look beyond a simple coin-size rule. The damage location, depth, condition and your vehicle’s equipment all matter. The goal is to explain whether a repair is appropriate, what improvement to expect and what it will cost before work begins.

Have your vehicle details and a description of the damage ready. We can help you plan a repair assessment, discuss applicable insurance coverage or provide a self-pay quote.

Can your windshield chip or crack be repaired?

A small rock chip may be a candidate for repair, but size alone does not tell the whole story. The technician considers the damage’s shape, depth, location and condition, together with your vehicle’s glass and camera requirements.

Describe the damage you see

  • Bullseye: a rounded break around the impact point.
  • Star break: several small cracks extending from the impact.
  • Combination break: a mix of circular damage and radiating cracks.
  • Crack: a line in the glass; its length, path and depth need assessment.

These descriptions help explain the problem when you call. They do not establish that a particular break can be repaired.

What can rule out a repair?

Damage to the inner glass layer, damage through both layers, contamination that cannot be removed or a damaged interlayer can make repair unsuitable. Damage in the driver’s critical viewing area, near an edge or in a camera’s viewing area needs particular attention.

A technician should also know whether the chip has spread or already been treated. If repair is unsuitable, we can explain your windshield replacement options.

These assessment factors follow the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard. Your individual windshield still needs an inspection before a service recommendation.

Windshield chip repair cost and insurance options

Request a quote for the damage on your vehicle. The number of chips, their condition and the proposed service arrangement help determine the work involved. Tell us about every damaged spot so your estimate reflects the full assessment.

Information for an accurate quote

  • Your vehicle year, make and model.
  • The number, approximate size and location of damaged areas.
  • When the damage occurred and whether it has changed.
  • Any previous repair attempt or product applied to the chip.
  • Your service address and ZIP code and preferred appointment times.

Ask what the quoted price includes and how any additional chips would be handled. Self-pay quotes are available if you are not using insurance.

Will insurance pay for chip repair?

Coverage, authorization and any deductible depend on your policy and insurer. A glass-repair benefit may reduce your out-of-pocket cost, but do not assume every repair is free or every deductible is waived. AGD can help coordinate the claim information.

Arizona’s no-deductible safety-equipment coverage is an option that insurers offering private-passenger comprehensive coverage must offer. It is not automatically included in every policy. Read Arizona’s coverage provision and confirm your own benefits before service.

Our auto glass insurance guide explains the details to have ready. Ask for both the repair quote and your expected share of an approved claim.

Will the repaired chip disappear?

Windshield repair aims to stabilize suitable damage and improve the damaged area’s clarity. It does not return the glass to an untouched condition. A small scar, outline or other visible mark can remain after the repair.

The original impact, cracks within the break and contamination affect the result. Before work begins, ask the technician what improvement is realistic for your chip, especially if it sits where you look through the windshield.

Keep the existing windshield when suitable

A resin repair treats the damaged area while the windshield stays installed, preserving its existing bond to the vehicle. This can avoid a full glass replacement when the damage qualifies.

Not every attempted repair succeeds, and damage can spread during the procedure. The assessment and discussion of repair limits are part of deciding whether to proceed. Ask about the next step if the technician finds that replacement is needed.

The repair process

How professional windshield chip repair works

Step 1

Inspect and prepare

The technician assesses the damage and vehicle requirements, explains the proposed repair and prepares the damaged area when it is suitable for treatment.

Step 2

Fill and cure the break

Professional equipment removes air from the break and introduces repair resin. The resin is cured as part of the repair while the windshield remains in place.

Step 3

Finish and review

The technician finishes the surface and checks the repair. Review the result, any remaining mark and the instructions for normal use and follow-up care.

What to check after your windshield repair

Review the repaired area with the technician before you leave. Ask what mark is expected to remain, whether the repair is ready for normal use and whether any product-specific care instructions apply.

Resin curing and finishing are part of the chip-repair process. A repair keeps the windshield installed, so instructions for a newly bonded replacement windshield do not automatically apply. Follow the guidance provided for your completed repair.

If you notice new spreading or a change in visibility at the repaired spot, contact AGD to have it evaluated.

Understand the repair warranty

AGD’s published repair terms describe a repair-cost credit toward replacement in specified circumstances. This is not a promise of a free replacement windshield or an invisible repair.

Read the repair section of our written windshield warranty and ask how it applies before service. The repair provisions and the coverage for installing new glass are different.

Keep your invoice and service information. If the repaired area spreads or your visibility changes, call (480) 289-5108 with the vehicle details and service date so AGD can arrange an assessment.

Windshield Repair FAQs

How long does windshield chip repair take?

Timing depends on the number and condition of the damaged spots, preparation, resin curing and final inspection. Ask for an estimate when booking and confirm that the completed repair is ready for use before leaving.

Can an old chip still be repaired?

Possibly. Age alone does not decide repairability, but dirt, moisture, spreading and previous treatment can affect the result. Describe the history when you call and have the technician inspect the damage.

Can you repair more than one chip on the same windshield?

Each damaged spot needs its own assessment, including its location and any interaction with other damage. Tell AGD how many chips you can see and ask whether the quote includes all of them.

Can a chip in my line of sight be repaired?

Damage in the driver’s critical viewing area has additional limits because a residual mark may affect visibility. Do not assume a small chip qualifies based on size alone. Arrange an assessment and ask whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

What if the chip is near the windshield camera?

The vehicle manufacturer may restrict repairs in the camera’s viewing area. Share your vehicle details and mention lane assistance or forward-collision features when booking. Repair suitability and any follow-up requirements depend on the particular vehicle.

Should I try a DIY repair kit first?

If you plan to have AGD assess the chip, speak with us before applying a repair product. Previous resin or other treatment can affect the remaining options. If you have already used a kit, disclose that before the assessment; a second repair cannot be guaranteed.

Can I get same-day chip repair in Phoenix or Tempe?

Ask about current availability. Scheduling depends on the damage, technician availability and appropriate service location. Confirm the appointment and whether it is a location visit or an available mobile repair before traveling.

What happens if a repaired chip starts spreading?

Contact AGD and provide your service information so the repaired area can be evaluated. The published repair terms describe a credit of the repair cost toward replacement in specified circumstances. Review the repair warranty provisions for the applicable terms.
