When to Repair and When to Replace Your Windshield

Repair or replace? That’s a big question car owners encounter when they notice a crack or chip in their windshield. Repairing instead of purchasing a windshield replacement is an attractive option because of the cost savings. However, certain types of damage are best replaced due to safety concerns.

Windshield Replacement

A windscreen needs to be replaced when it presents a serious safety concern. Consider these factors.

  1. Length of the window crack: An especially long crack is a concern because it can so easily lead to more damage. In general, anything over six inches, or the length of a dollar bill, will need a full windshield replacement.
  2. Location of the crack: If the damage extends to the edge of the windshield it is not a candidate for repair. The glass is greatly compromised and may fail to properly support the car roof or deflect the airbags in the event of an accident.
  3. Depth of crack or chip: This type of glass is made up of several layers. Damage that penetrates more than halfway needs to be replaced.

Windshield Repair

In other cases, a windshield typically can be repaired for an affordable price. Small chips and cracks may not be an urgent safety matter, however, they can lead to additional damage.
