What Does the Future of Auto Glass Look Like?

Your windshield is just a piece of glass in your car that adds structural integrity and provides safety and protection you from things like dirt, debris and other airborne objects. Right?  Well, that may be the case right now (though even now that is still a very simplified description of what a windshield does), but in that is certainly not the future of windshields.  Just like everything else, technology is becoming more and more intwined with everyday objects.  Windshields are rapidly getting more and more new technology features that enhance the very nature of what they are.

There are already windshields on the market that have digital displays (also known as ‘heads up’ displays) and many windshields in the future will have screens integrated into them for enhanced technology automation.  Motorburn describes the new technology being seen in windshields and how what the future of auto glass looks like, “More and more vehicles have one or more Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are systems developed to automate/adapt/enhance vehicle systems for safety and better driving. Safety features are designed to avoid collisions and accidents by offering technologies that alert the driver to the potential problems or to avoid collisions by implementing safeguards and taking over control of the vehicle. Adaptive features may automate lighting, provide adaptive cruise control, automate breaking, incorporate GPS/traffic warnings, connect to smartphones, automatic parking, and alert driver to other cars or dangers, keep the driver in the correct lane or show what is in blinds spots.”

Artificial intelligence is being incorporated to make it easier and more accurate for auto glass repair shops to effectively do their job.  Gone are the days of windshields being simply a screen of protection.  While they still provide that basic and very important necessity, the modern windshield will be a technologically advanced tool that improves safety and the overall driving experience.
