Exploding sunroofs? Sounds sort of crazy, right? But, in the last year or so there have been many headlines about consumers reporting that their car’s sunroof ‘exploded.’ So, should you be concerned that your car’s sunroof will be explode? Unfortunately, exploding sunroofs are not an urban myth, as Consumer Reports has found, “An exploding sunroof might sound like a freak occurrence, but a Consumer Reports investigation has found that it’s not. These incidents have happened in every month of the year in every part of the country, in vehicles from all over the world; they have occurred on interstates, on country roads, and even while parked in driveways. Sunroofs have significantly expanded in size in recent years, and they’ve also grown in popularity. And the number of consumer complaints about them shattering without warning has soared. While this doesn’t happen nearly as often as, say, a tire blowout on the highway, any explosion while driving can present a real safety hazard. And although the issue is well known to the auto industry and government safety regulators, drivers generally assume that their sunroofs are safe.”
It should be emphasized that the odds of a sunroof exploding on your while driving are very slim. And, those odds are increased depending on the vehicle make and model as well as the size of the sunroof. While the odds are certainly slim, if you do have a sunroof explode or break in any capacity it is important to have the glass repaired as quickly as possible. The sunroof window is a component of the structural integrity of your vehicle so it is imperative that you do not drive a vehicle with compromised structural integrity. The tempered glass used in vehicle’s sunroofs is designed to shatter into tiny pieces when broken so not only can it be dangerous for passengers but it can get into the tracks used in sunroofs, making it more challenging to repair. The sooner you get your vehicle to an experienced, knowledgeable, and reputable auto glass repair shop after your sunroof glass has shattered or exploded, the sooner your vehicle will be safe to drive again
