**Moisture getting in the crack can cause a crack to spread. Your windshield is basically a glass sandwich with two pieces of glass with a layer of vinyl in between.  With no room for the moisture to expand or contract with the weather it causes stress on the glass, resulting in cracks.

**Dirt, just like moisture can get inside a crack causing stress on the glass causing cracking.

**Extreme Temps- When you have the combination of high summer time temps and a powerful air conditioner it can be too much for the windshield to handle. The difference in outside temps with the cold air inside the vehicle can cause an already damaged windshield to crack. 

**The Sun alone can cause a cracked or chipped windshield to crack. The heat from the sun can not only burn your skin it can cause your windshield to get so hot that a crack or chip can spread quickly!  Keeping your vehicle in the shade or better yet in the garage until you get the damaged repaired it your best option. 

**Bumps in the road can also cause your chips or cracks to spread. You can be driving along and hit a small bump and bam it spreads across the entire windshield.  Once your windshield starts to spread almost nothing can stop it short of replacing the entire windshield.
