Common Reasons Your Windshield Cracks

Posted by Jaime Block on Jan 03, 2016

Everyone wants their  vehicle to look amazing when they are out and about. A clean, well-maintained car runs much better than a dirty or broken one. The better your car runs, the less money you will end up spending on repairs in the end.

Despite your solid efforts to maintain your vehicle, your car is still susceptible to minor damages on a daily basis. Going over a speed bump too fast will scrape the bottom and your paint can get chipped with your keys as you look for the lock in the dark. Just as well, debris or gravel can fly up at your windshield, causing both cracks and chips!

Windshield damage happens to everyone and it happens often, so don’t feel frustrated if you happen to come across a new crack or chip.. Below, you will find an overview of what causes windshield damage, so you can do your best to try to avoid it.

Common Causes of Windshield Damage

This is one of the more common causes, although an accident can do much more damage than crack your windshield. Just as well, minor fender benders can also cause damage. Be aware of your surroundings while driving, and you are less likely to get into an auto accident or crash.

**Gravel Roads

Whenever you drive on roads covered in gravel and debris, your car could very well spin the gravel into the air, & the gravel could hit your windshield. Airborne rocks or gravel can come from the driver in front of you, however, keeping a safe distance between you and that car can help to avoid any issues. Regular roads have gravel and debris as well, so it’s important to always follow the 3 second rule.   Stay 3 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you.

Sunlight can cause similar problems as do temperature changes. The Sun heats up the metal & materials around the glass, which in turn causes the glass’s outer edges to expand quicker than the middle and OH CHIP, you got yourself a crack.  Try to avoid parking in the sunshine by choosing covered parking or even a garage.  Always make the right decisions when parking.

**Pressure Changes

Sudden pressure changes due to high speeds, explosions, or objects pressing on the windshield, can cause stress cracks or fractures.  So be aware of how fast you speed up while driving on the highways.

 Other Factors

**Driving Behind Construction Vehicles

**Poor Construction or cheap materials when the vehicle is made

**Changes in Temperature

**A prior installation by a company that was not certified
